What was it like, did you suffer altitude sickness or were just giddy from luxury, were you in a tent or a luxury hotel? Tell us your tales and suggestions!

Me and a friend travelled to South America and stayed a few days in La Paz, Bolivia (which at its highest point is 4200ft above sea level)
We had been travelling for over 36 hours when we landed and hadn't anticipated arriving at 3am La Paz time (when the streets were dead and very spooky). Thankfully we met a guy at the airport who was from the UK and had been working in Ecuador, and he helped us navigate the taxi driver to our hostel which we had booked beforehand. However the security guards were not keen on letting us in after curfew and we thought that we would have to stay the night outside the hostel. Luckily after the mystery man spoke on our behalf, we were allowed in and shown to our tiny room.
We had heard horror stories about altitude sickness prior to going but it wasn't too bad. We were told to suck on coca sweets which is supposed to help with the pressure.
I didn't really feel sick (had a bit of a headache) but walking out of the dingy hostel on the first day I felt about a 100 years old, it was so strange, my legs felt like lead and I had no energy whatsoever.
The city itself was fantastic, lots of markets selling strange herbal remedies and real life 'witches' walking around in bowler hats (no pointy ones!). There was a lot of gorgeous cheap silver jewellery on street stalls too.
