Remains of 17th- and 18th-century sugar plantations are everywhere throughout the Caribbean, but it is unusual to find an actual working windmill of the type used to grind sugarcane on those plantations. Betty’s Hope offers that rare find, in one working and one non-working mill surrounded by ruins of a plantation that was a major agricultural contributor to the economy of the island from about 1650 to the 1920s. Exhibits of the island’s plantation era are displayed in the visitors’ center. An eco-tourism enhancement project aims to continue the conservation of the site.
