Laid-back Winnifred Beach is a rarity in Jamaica. This spectacular white-sand cove has still not fallen victim to development and thus retains its pristine quality. At the moment, only forested cliffs border this curve of soft, powdery sand.
People can walk down to the beach from the main road, just opposite the Jamaica Crest Resort. The only buildings breaking the view are the odd shacks selling food and drink alongside the not-so-functional changing facilities. There is a small reef, which is ideal for snorkeling but visitors need to bring their own equipment.
This lovely place is as popular with locals as it is with visitors. However, the regulars are in the midst of a dispute with the government, whose redevelopment plans could irrevocably alter the character of Winnifred Beach.
