This will be my first solo trip outside of the States. I plan to be in Berlin in mid- to late March; my trip planning is still in the beginning stages. While I look forward to taking a solo trip, there are certainly times I wouldn't mind meeting new people who are maybe also traveling solo or in a small group. I am thinking I might find it fun to have some pub-crawling buddies. I'm not a huge drinker but I definitely want to explore Berlin's bars, dining options, and some nightlife. I'll add more here as I firm up my plans.
First day in Berlin: Try to get on a free Sandeman's New Berlin tour. This should cover the basic touristy stuff and help orient me to the Mitte area.
I want to spend at least one entire day in Kreuzberg. Go to the Museum of Things. Check out a few bookshops. (I think the ones I am interested in are in Kreuzberg.) Go to the Finnish sauna. Badeschiff? See some art. Eat the best currywurst. Maybe take this tour: http://www.viator.com/tours/Berlin/Kreuzberg-District-Tour-Food-Culture-and-Street-Art/d488-6002DEUC This tour is likely a good way to meet other travelers, too.
My biggest worry during the trip is finding myself alone and bored in the evenings, too chicken to venture out by my lonesome. I might like to see a symphony concert--things like that I not only don't mind going to alone--sometimes I prefer going alone. But it is nice, too, to talk afterward about the art you saw with someone else. Get dinner, drink some beers. Exploring nightlife is more fun with a friend. And safety in numbers, you know.
I want to see the Kathe Kollwitz museum (Fasanenstr. 24; open daily 11-6; EUR 6 entry) in Charlottenburg and might as well see other sights in the neighborhood while I am there.
Now here's my latest plan: Fly into Vienna. After checking in, etc., go to Leopold Museum. It has Schiele and Klimt. With remaining time in Vienna, take a walking tour to see the must-see touristy things. Possibly go to Belvedere. Stay through the following day. Then go to Prague. I might be doing an organized-group tour of Prague that actually provides transport from Vienna. I am hoping they're OK with me taking off on my own in Prague instead of returning to Vienna with them--just sent the organizer an e-mail. I would rather stay the night and potter around a bit more in Prague the following morning, then hop on a train for Dresden and do the same there--an overnight. Then the next day, off to Berlin, where I would stay for a week. I would fly out of Berlin to return home.
