Did you know that about 88% of people who set New Year resolutions fail? And it’s around this time of year that we start to fall off the New Year resolution wagon, which is a huge shame as the benefits of pushing yourself to do something different are manifold.
Don’t become just another New Year resolution statistic! Here are some simple steps you can take to make sure your New Year resolutions are a resounding success.

3. Keep it realistic
Keep your resolutions realistic. Face it: unless you’re already an established author, the chances of you writing a best-selling novel in a year are pretty slim, and unless you’ve got a whopping disposable income and shedloads of time on your hands, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to take a long-haul holiday every month of the year.
4. Take baby steps
Break your resolution down into simple, realistic, achievable and easily identifiable steps set within a clear timeframe. So, instead of aiming to write a best-selling novel, set yourself a target of writing one chapter a month. By monitoring your progress in this way you are rewarded with a regular feeling of achievement, and having a chapter-by-chapter body of work is a solid reminder of the strength of your willpower, even if nobody else ever reads it.
Plus, this gives you something positive to report when all those pesky people you told about your resolution check up on you.
5. Establish a clear timeline
Set out a series of deadlines to help you stay focused. Ideally, they should be set at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 12 weeks and 1 year, with each deadline having a specific target that builds momentum towards your big-picture resolution. So if you want to learn Spanish, set a target of memorising one new word every day, start a class in mid-February, book an immersive Spanish language holiday for March/April, and aim to be able to hold your own in conversation in Spanish by December.
And finally, another way to help you stick at it is to make it about more than just yourself. So if you want to take more exercise, run a 5km, 10km, half marathon or even a marathon for charity, or if you want to travel more, consider a volunteering break.
